A traditional mix of music, dance, and martial arts originating among enslaved Africans working the plantations of Bahia, capoeira remains at the heart of local identity even while having become a national sport. 

Classes can be taken privately in UXUA’s studio or with Trancoso natives at the Casa da Cultura (“Culture Center”), where since 2008 UXUA sponsors the group Capoeira Sul da Bahia, helping local children study regardless of their ability to pay for instruction.
